I think and I feel

I don’t remember what point a colleague of mine was making when he said something to the effect that we should “put aside our emotions and deal with the facts” to which my teacher retorted, “I believe emotions inform”. This may be the most brilliant statement she has said thus far. The statement itself is really a summary of many of the things she’s said in class. I love this class and fortunately it has given me an opportunity to broaden my view of feminism and actually find myself nodding in agreement in many instances. The idea that “logic” and “emotion” can coexist on equal terms is what I hope we as women can begin to strive for in feminism and in life.
The struggle of old school feminism was to basically say, “I want what they have”. A striving for equality and power which we have been given in many ways –more women are working and receiving higher levels of education, but what I think we did not realize is that competing with our male counterparts and succeeding on their level may have brought us superficial equality and power but it has not brought us respect.
Firstly it caused a large segment of women to abandon characteristically feminine roles and take on traditionally masculine roles, essentially saying to men “You know what you’re right, you are better them me”. In that way we gave men the permission to further degrade our tradition roles in hopes of gaining power and equality. But in our entering the work place we found ourselves again subordinated to men whether through being given menial jobs, lower pay or never breaking the glass ceiling. Worse then this most women were not relieved of their traditional roles at home, if they still chose to have a family, men still do little house work and women are still the primary care givers. So we found ourselves essentially overburdened and still searching for power and equality in a man’s world.
We have yet to deal with the underlining issue that women continuously face whether in a male dominated work world on in the feminine domestic sphere. The essential issue is the very core of male- female relations; men simply don’t value women or characteristically feminine roles, ideas, behaviors, attitudes, etc. Men in any field will never respect women if men simply don’t respect women in a larger more general sense. And women only further push the idea of inferiority when we dress up in men’s suits and sit in meeting were we silence any thought that is remotely feminine. I am being purposefully stereotypical in order to deal with the bigger picture; in general women are more talkative, nurturing and emotional then men. Men on the other hand are more logical, physically stronger and one- task oriented (men are usually poor at multitasking). But what makes being logical inherently better then being emotional? I would argue, absolutely nothing. As my teacher beautifully said, “emotion informs”.
This reminds me of the famous story of the Messenger of God, peace upon him, after giving his army a command to shave their heads (I’m cutting out most of the story to make a particular related point) they all disobeyed. Not knowing what to do he went to his tent and told his wife , Umm Salama, she then told him, peace upon him, to shave his on head. He listened to her and the companions followed suit. Logically the companions should have jumped to listen to any command of the Prophet, peace upon him, but emotionally these were trying times. Umm Salama informed her husband through emotion not logic. When the companions felt the command over simply hearing if they were moved to action.
When women are respected simply for being women and for contributing in a unique way in society we will be respected in all parts of society. But until we pride ourselves in our femininity we can never look forward to a society where we are equally valued as our male counterparts.*

*Note: Obviously some women are not stereotypical feminine nor are some men stereotypically masculine. Which argues the larger part that people should be accepted for their contributions as individual human beings that have something unique and purposeful to offer to the world. I am of course not including the sin of women making a point to act like men (i.e. imitating a masculine voice) or men acting like women (i.e. speaking in a feminine voice) this is an entirely different issue. I would rather point to someone like Ayesha, may Allah be pleased with her, who never bore children, lead and army, and was a great woman of knowledge or men like Imam An Nawawi, may Allah give him mercy, who lived as an ascetic, never married and also dedicated his life to knowledge.

My Lord and Savior

Besides being a psychologist their were two major careers that I also considered. One was philosophy the other was music. Both of which I learned over time is haram. In fact I only learned philosophy was haram to learn and teach (without the purpose of learning in order to refute it) a few days ago in a lesson with my teacher. And music I already knew was haram but I'd heard different opinions on the matters and most Muslims I know listen to music. Both of these career paths I now realize were selfish, being a philosopher would just make me feel like I had a big brain and was better then everyone else, while being a musician would make me completely self involved. Alhumduillah I'm glad God took me away from both of those fields. Psychology, especially with a sound islamic background, is in the service of others. The one who serves the Muslims will be helped by Allah, Insha Allah, and success comes from Allah alone.

Dhul Hijja Day 3

Today wasn't the best day. I didn't fast, partly because I didn't wake up for sehr and partly because of Sunday brunch. So I went to my Sunday class and it was canceled. Mecca has a very bad habit of not telling students when a class is canceled. So I decided to go for a walk which turned in to a shopping spree in UO and Zara's my two favorite stores. Today they actually proved themselves. I got some really nice stuff, Masha Allah. Mostly modest but their are two items that I definitely have to halalify.
Insha Allah I want to start spending no more then 25 dollars a weeks, mostly on transportation. Now I'm officially in the hole $2,015 but Insha Allah if I spend no more then 25 dollars for the next three months I'll be able to save it up once again. I'm not to mad at myself about the clothes cause it really is nice stuff that -Insha Allah, I'll be able to wear it for years to come. My craziest spending has been all the shoes I've gotten and all the money I've spent of face products. Now that I have nice simple clothes that I've been wanting and enough face products to last me some time, I should be able to slow down, Insha Allah, may Allah have mercy on me.
I have been pausing to make dua, dhikr, and read quran after each salat which I feel makes the salat even better for me. I've been memorizing Imam Al Haddad's poem too. But I have realized how hard it is not do anything Islamic, its almost impossible. La illaha illala, that's all for now.

The last coffee

Ok, I have food issues for sure. Maybe I'm a bit hard on myself. But the past two weeks have been extreme, I had like two candy bars or some kind of sweet. Yesterday was probably the the first day in two weeks (probably more) that I had a day without sweets. I did have a ton of bread though. In fact  I had bread all throughout the day. I've been reading 'wheat belly which has me convinced that wheat is... evil. Anywho, today was much better, unfortunately I did have two cups of coffee which I didn't plan on but the sugar fix got the best of me.
I also just watched 'sick, fat and nearly dead', so I think I'll go on a juice fast Insha Allah this week coming starting on Monday. It should jump start my health, clean up my skin and help me lose some weight. Actually this could be very good for me because this Friday (or Saturday) will be the first of Dhul Hijjah. So not taking an even further step to not focus on food is probably a good idea. The guy who made the film, which is now a whole movement, recommends first going 5 days and then extending is able. Insha Allah this will be good for my mind, body and spirit. I really need to release myself from my attachment to sugar and all other nasty processed food. The closer we are to whole foods is the closer we are to God's original creation and maybe it will even bring us closer to God.

The tides are turning

I've pretty much always looked fondly on the idea of marriage. Two people, in love sharing their lives together. What could be better then that? Though I've had some moments where I thought marriage was a death sentence -two people sharing their lives together, seeing each other day in and day out, criticizing, arguing... now that I want to get married myself I think both my admiration of marriage and fear of it are coming in to play.
I know I want to get married for the baraka, the physical closeness, the new experiences, etc. But the idea of getting so close to someone emotionally; frightens me. I want so badly to have that connection but its hard for me to say 'I like you' or to say 'when will I see you again?' even though I want to. My one other sincere experience with marriage talks came maybe 3 or 4 year ago. I was "in love" with a guy I'd "known" since my young teenage years. To me he was perfect. He was everything I could have wanted in a future spouse, so I thought, and I told him that -over facebook. Very bad idea.
My mom later told me that a man should like you more then you like him, and I now see the wisdom in that. But maybe I'm letting that hold me back to much. Or maybe I'm just to worried. I still think me and the new guy had a good time talking to each other and I learned new things about him. He said he likes me and he said I looked beautiful today, Alhumduillah, that made me feel really good. But I was reluctant to say 'I like you too' or 'That hat looks pretty good on you'. I guess there's a part of me that's afraid of things not going well and there's a part of me that feels the opposite. It's frustrating because I know that this is a blessing from Allah that someone has taken interest in me especially after my first experience went so poorly. But still I wonder, Is he gonna call me? Will he get bored of me? When will I know if its right? Insha Allah I'll put my trust is God  and make dua for the best.

How not to lie

1. Be sincere
2. Don't be afraid to take things back
3. Don't be afraid to admit you don't know when you don't
4. Don't put others perceptions of you over being truthful
5. Try not to making generalizations, starting a sentence with "all"
or "everyone" is usually the beginning of a lie
6. Remember that your misinformation can lead other astray
7. Don't take lying lightly
8. Try not to talk so much
9. The truth is not always funny but lying never is
10. Only Allah knows the future so don't forget to say Insha Allah!

William Wordsworth- The world is too much with us

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;
Little we see in Nature that is ours;

We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours,

And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers,
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not.--Great God! I'd rather be

A pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,

Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathèd horn

The sanctitude of solitude: Heres a place to stay no questions asked

Wouldn't it be great if there was a place you could go a stay for a few days maybe a few weeks no questions asked. You could just go there and regroup, get your mind off some things. You would come in to the room check and it would be filled with books and art. You could have a small room to yourself only with the essentials you need and nothing more. Noone would hasle you or ask you for anything
Everyone would smile but not say much meals would be serve. There would all kinds of people there to help you relax like a masseuse, a therapist, a doctor, a religious authority, a herbalist etc. And whenever you needed there help you would just smile and nod and they'd give you exactly what you need because they already knew. And when you where ready to leave you would just leave no questions asked. And you could go back to you mate or children, work or school feeling recuperated and ready to begin again

Becoming someone

Alhumduillah (All praise due to Allah),
Ive been out of school for a few months now. I figure I should use this time to 'search for myself'. I love when I hear people say that. There going to find themselves, would that be great to go on some journey and discover my real true self. What a kind relief that would be. But that's not real is it? I truth I've been traveling all my life. My not out of the country, but physically and mentally I've been places, been through different experiences, I've grown, and whether or not I like who I am -I am who I am.
Honestly I'm not the kind of person who's a searcher. I haven't tried many different things in life. I'm never consumed by any particular lifestyle. But now I feel like in this time in my life Allah is giving me this space to do something. Write a book, start a band, study my religion, philosopher, study psych from a-z, learn arabic. And I guess the other question is, do I want to find myself -do I want to change in to one certain identity? Do I wanna be oh Nuriddeen she's the one who-. I walked through so much of life without ever really belonging. And alot of my life I've enjoyed being this way because it gave me a chance to move through different groups without feeling overly connected -always being able to be there without really being there. Being able to constantly move on whenever I felt like I wanted to. But is it time for me to find my niche an stick to it. Is it time for me to find my place in life?

A pink moment

I had a pink moment today in class. I guess I should explain what a pink moment is. When I was in elementary school my teacher asked all the girls how many of us favorite color is pink. I being a girly girl and an avid lover of the color pink -proudly raised my hand. To my surprise I was the only girl who like the lone ranger on the matter.
Well my pink moment came again today. My professor asked the woman of the class how many of us wanted to get married -and again I was a lone ranger. Women mentioned things like economic freedom, fertility clinics, and the infamous "I don't believe in marriage" as their reasons. A male in the class tried to stand for marriage but their voices sound like they were drowning in a sea of discontent.
But how did us Americans get to this point. Do we really not want to get married. I for one want to get married, be a stay at home wife and mother. Sure eventually I want to have a career, but since when is work more important then starting a family. Many of the women said they would want to be mothers. But don't they see the correlation and preparation being a wife has to being a mother. To have to love and care for someone unconditionally -your husband then to the same for your baby through love and the characteristics you have acquired as a wife. I have seen my mother work and raise us five girls (with help from my dad) all her life. That is simple not the road I want to take -to wear so many hats at once. Yes I have personal aspirations but I refuse to take on everything at once. I have seen and so have most of us seen, our mothers working, cooking, cleaning, taking us to the mall -but something always suffers.
Therefore even when I feel ostracized I can still feel strength and happiness when I have a pink moment.
